When to know it’s time to take a break

By Andrea Kartika Deierlein

June 21, 2024

The body tells us when it’s time to take a break. Yet too many have unlearned to listen to its signals and messages. Some may have even stopped listening to their bodies and keep pushing through, until a health scare, crisis or diagnosis forces them to do pause and approach life differently.

Fueled by survival instincts, fears, or productivity quests, natural rhythms and flows make way to schedules and calendars, meals are consumed on the go, sleep gets postponed, and social interactions feel like transactions.

According to a recent TIME article, the 4 signs your body is telling you to take a break are:

  1. Emotional changes
  2. Strained relationships
  3. Catching a cold
  4. Digestive difficulties and sleep issues

So, wouldn’t it be essential to know when to take a break? To listen to your body, and not just the mind? To have an anchor within yourself? To know when to stop, pause, return to your sense of self? To feel centered and grounded from within?

Just think of how you feel when a storm is about to hit. Do you notice tension and anxiety rise around you – and inside of you?

Look at this tree: How it is rooted deeply into the ground. With a strong trunk.

When the storms of life happen, it may bend, it may sway. Yet, it doesn’t break.

It’s time for a break for me, too. I’ll be out of office June 20-July 9. While I’m away, I leave you with some of my guided meditations that you can access for free on my website here.

May you have moments of presence, pause, and connection – today and every day.
