Have you heard about secondhand stress? Researchers have found that simply observing someone who is stressed can have an immediate impact on your own nervous system. Harvard Business Review even highlights how stress can be contagious in workplaces, homes, and social settings.
As humans, we’re hardwired to perceive potential threats to keep us safe. But in today’s hyper-connected world, it’s easy to become overexposed to stressors. It’s like the “danger alerts” never turn off, and fear and anxiety become constant companions. In this current climate, it often feels like we’re swimming in a stress soup.
Now more than ever, being present, grounded, and centered is essential. By tuning into our senses, we can redirect our energy and awareness, creating a sense of calm amidst the chaos.
Energy Goes Where Attention Flows
When stress, fear, anxiety, or overwhelm start to creep in—whether through muscle tension, shallow breathing, or racing thoughts—take a moment to notice where your attention is.
Are your thoughts consumed by the news, worries, or an endless to-do list?
Here’s how you can use your senses to practice mindfulness and return to the present moment:
🔹 Sight: Look around your space. Find something that sparks joy or comfort and rest your gaze there for a few moments.
🔹 Touch: Place your hands on your stomach. Notice their warmth and weight as they rest there.
🔹 Hearing: Listen to your breath as you inhale and exhale. Pay attention to its natural rhythm.
🔹 Smell: Take a deep breath in—what scents do you notice? Perhaps a candle, fresh air, or a familiar aroma?
🔹 Taste: Pause for a moment to savor the taste of what you’re drinking or eating.
Bringing your awareness back to your senses can offer a moment of presence, calm, and mindfulness—something we all need more of in our daily lives.
May you experience moments of peace and presence today and every day.
