For many people, Reiki is a healing art. The art of hands-on healing. Especially when people first turn to a Reiki practitioner seeking physical or emotional relief or support when dealing with life’s challenges. But Reiki is so much more than hands-on healing. One of the greatest gifts that Reiki has given me is a sense of connection - with myself, with others, and with life.
My client Ken has been coming for sessions since May 22, 2017. He sought a way to deal with the stresses of working as an attorney. He’s now retired and even though he took my Reiki 1 training, he still comes for sessions when he’s in New York. We developed our own rituals over the years. For each session, Ken brings a new music playlist. I call this my musical education. I shared Reiki with him to the tunes of the Beach Boys (keeping my focus during “Kokomo” was quite an experience), Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and several groups from the 60s and 70s I don’t remember. Ken chooses the music based on how it makes him feel and what helps him relax. Our sessions are a wonderful example of being true to our way and our being (one of the Reiki precepts). We also dance and shake things off before he gets on the table.
There is a growing body of research that proves the healing power of touch. But human touch is not just limited to physical contact. It’s about connection. Through a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, someone who is present.
Reiki is no cure for any ailments or diseases. But a Reiki session provides a little of that human touch and healing environment rooted in kindness and compassion. Reiki also teaches the art of letting go, a letting go of attachments to the past and to the future, so that we can be in touch with and in the present moment.
